Ingredients

  • 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough, thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.

In a bowl, combine the finely chopped nuts and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying out. Place one sheet of phyllo in the greased baking dish and brush it lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering and buttering each sheet, until you have about 8 sheets layered.

Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Repeat the layering of phyllo and nuts, alternating until all the nuts are used up, finishing with about 8 more sheets of phyllo on top, each brushed with butter.

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.

While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Once the baklava is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the warm syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Allow it to cool completely before serving, allowing the syrup to soak into the layers.

Enjoy your delightful homemade baklava, a perfect balance of crispiness and sweetness!
